The United States Department of Agriculture is stepping up preventative steps for African Swine Fever. The disease has been a focus of those producers attending the National Pork Forum this week. National Pork Producers Council Chief Veterinarian Dr. Liz Wagstrom says they’re pleased the Ag Department is funding additional teams of beagle dogs with the customs and border patrol to guard against the disease.

She says it’s also positive the USDA is developing reliable testing procedures for the virus in grains and feed.

Wagstrom says the USDA is also increasing inspection of garbage breeding facilities.

The added prevention steps by the USDA are in continued cooperation with Canada and Mexico on a North American coordinated approach to ASF defense and response.
