Unused prescriptions will be collected at various sites around South Dakota during the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday. USDA Rural Development State Executive Director Julie Gross says her agency is helping in the effort as recent statistics show nearly 50 percent of Rural Americans have been directly impacted by opioid abuse. And she says it is a growing problem.
She says Rural Americans tend to be more susceptible to opioid abuse.
Gross says drug overdose related deaths hit a peak last year.
In 2017, over 900,000 pounds of unused pills were collected. Gross says there are various drop off sites around the state that will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To find the site near you log onto takebackday.gov. and enter your zip code.
