The U.S. Department of Agriculture is rolling out a new insurance option specifically designed for producers with small farms who sell locally. It’s called the Micro Farm Policy and it simplifies record keeping and covers post production costs like washing and value added programs. Iowa Farmers Union President Aaron Lehman sees this as a great option for those just starting to farm as well as for others.

He says this Micro Farm Policy fits well with producers who are looking at diversifying their operation.

Lehman says several Iowa farmers are in a position to be able to utilize this type of insurance program.

The Micro Farm Policy will be available beginning with the 2022 crop year. It’s offered through Whole Farm Revenue Protection.
