The U-S Department of Agriculture has announced 3.1 million acres have been accepted to be enrolled in the Grasslands CRP program.  South Dakota rates second following Colorado with having the most acres enrolled in the conservation program.  Owen Fagerhaug serves as South Dakota’s FSA’s Conservation Program Manager.  He says South Dakota has enrolled more than 424,000 acres.  He offers an explanation as to why the federal program is popular with South Dakota farmers and ranchers.  Fagerhaug says with the threat of another drought this summer, the Grasslands CRP will serve as a nice backup plan for producers’ hay and grass needs.  The USDA Farm Services Agency official says the program will help landowners with providing conservation measures.  Nebraska ranks third in the nation with slightly more than 400,000 acres enrolled in the Grasslands CRP program.
