USDA has released a proposal for the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard. The agency will now take public comments on the biotech labeling rules through July 3. USDA Under Secretary for Marketing and Regulatory Programs Greg Ibach says those comments will be used to define the products the labels will apply to and the amount of genetically modified ingredients that require a label.
USDA will also determine what the labels look like. And John Bode, CEO of the Corn Refiners Association says the Ag Department’s Agricultural Marketing Service was charged with the task of making the label a valuable resource for consumers to make informed decisions about food, but not stigmatizing biotech products.
Richard Wilkins with the American Soybean Association says they hope the label is done in a way that will protect this modern technology for agriculture, and not use emotional scare tactics.
The final label is expected this summer, the deadline was July 29.
