The USDA is predicting record corn and soybean yields in several states, including Iowa. The USDA estimates Iowa’s average corn yield at 197 bushels per acre, five bushels better than last year’s record yield. The soybean yield is estimated at 57 bushels per acre, up a half bushel from last year’s record. Brent Jacobsen, who farms near Gilman in central Iowa, says he’s expecting a very good crop.
Iowa ag secretary Bill Northey agrees the crops look excellent, but problems may be popping up in some corn fields.
As to whether those USDA projections sound right, Northey says we won’t know for sure until the combines hit the field this fall.
