The USDA has agreed to lift some restrictions on imports of fresh and frozen pork from Poland tied to concerns about African Swine Fever. Reports out of Poland indicate restrictions have been lifted on 16 plants, but remain in place on two plants. Nebraska Pork Producers Association Executive Director Al Juhnke says APHIS is taking the right steps and the U.S. is treating Poland the way we’d want to be treated.
He says if ASF were to show up in the U.S. it would make sense to regionalize the disease the same way Poland has in this case.
Juhnke says both Poland and the U.S. have proper inspection and safety protocols in place as it relates to swine diseases.
APHIS has retained restrictions on raw product and heat-treated pork, but not fully cooked pork from Poland.
