USDA has granted a conditional license for a vaccine to control the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus or PEDv. This is the first USDA conditional license granted for a PEDv vaccine since the initial outbreak. National Pork Producers Council President Dr. Howard Hill says since late 2013 Harrisvaccines has sold nearly 2 million doses through vet prescription. However, the emergency license will allow them to sell directly to the veterinarians and swine producers battling the disease.
Hill says all the major biologics companies are researching a vaccine for PEDv.
He expects additional PEDv vaccines to be released later this year or for sure during 2015.
