The USDA has extended the signup for the Soil Health and Income Protection or SHIPP program that began March 30. The new deadline is November 20, 2020 surpassing the previous deadline of September 30. South Dakota Farm Service Agency CRP Coordinator Owen Fagerhaug says SHIPP is a pilot program in both Dakotas, Iowa, Minnesota and Montana that offers shorter CRP contract for producers.
He says SHIPP gives producers a little incentive and allows them to enter into a shorter contract than the 15 year CRP.
Fagerhaug says there’s SHIPP acceptance is limited to 50,000 total acres in the five states. He says those interested in the program can sign up at their local FSA county office.
SHIPP’s goal is to improve soil and water health as well as wildlife resources on farms and ranches.
