USDA Extends Comment Deadline On Product Of USA Labeling Proposal

Due to heavy interest, the Food Safety and Inspection Service of USDA has extended the Product of the USA public comment period from this Friday to September 17. The Organization for Competitive Markets and American Grassfed Association had petitioned FSIS to stop imported meat from being mislabeled Product of the USA. OCM Executive Director Joe Maxwell says the agency has already received thousands of comments.

He says it’s imperative that anything with a Product of the USA label should only originate domestically.

Maxwell says without the change called for in their petition then mislabeling will continue which allows foreign sourced beef or pork to be labeled Product of the USA.

He says they’ve had 2,000 comments already filed and have another document with around 7,000 additional signatures so they’re close to 10,000 total comments. Maxwell says to comment you can go to CompetitiveMarkets.com.
