USDA is seeking public comment on whether the agency should draw up new rules to regulate biotechnology products. This comes after heavy criticism for not conducting environmental assessments on the potential effects of biotech crops. The agency is also looking at input on the proposed definition of biotechnology. NCGA Director of Biotechnology and Crop Inputs Nathan Fields says they have concerns with the proposal and that APHIS will broaden the definition.
He says the regulations don’t impact current technologies but will have an effect on new traits and products.

Fields says NCGA is also concerned about the possible impact the new rules could have on foreign markets.
Fields says his group wants to see more clarity and is working with the USDA on the proposal. They may ask for an extension of the 30-day public comment period to have time to address that.
