USDA Appointment Delays Causing Concern

The appointment of undersecretaries and other key positions at the U.S. Department of Agriculture is way behind and causing concern for farm groups. National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Colin Woodall says unfortunately the appointments have been slowed by politics and staff is critically needed to assist farmers during this time of low prices.

American Soybean Association President Ron Moore agrees. He says while they’re glad their former CEO Steve Censky has been confirmed as Deputy Secretary, there are critical farm programs that are being neglected due to the lack of staff.

Moore says they also want to see Gregg Doud confirmed as Chief Ag Negotiator with the U.S. Trade Representative’s Office as he’s needed for the re-negotiation of NAFTA.

So far, only Censky and undersecretaries Ted McKinney and Greg Ibach have been confirmed. Currently, there is a hold on Bill Northey’s confirmation and there is also a vacancy for chief scientist with Sam Clovis stepping down from consideration.
