U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack says his focus at USDA under the Biden Administration will be expanding market opportunities to help farmers become more profitable. He spoke at the closing session of the virtual Commodity Classic on Friday and says farmers need additional, but also better markets.
Vilsack says USDA also has a role to play in finding new trade opportunities and leveling the playing field in existing trade agreements.
However, the Secretary says fairer markets also have to start at home and that is why they’re reviewing the CFAP AA program before disseminating any additional payments.
Vilsack says they’re also taking time to evaluate the role USDA and the Commodity Credit Corporation can play in establishing a carbon credit bank.
