USD Udall Scholarship Recipient Looks to Native American Mothers and Children

Tamee Livermont, a University of South Dakota medical biology major, was awarded a Udall scholarship based on her interest in becoming a neonatologist serving Native American newborn infants and their mothers. Livermount said her older cousin, who is also a Neo-natal Nurse Practitioner, was part of her inspiration

Livermount, who grew up on the Pine Ridge Reservation says drug and alcohol addiction among pregnant Native American women is often overlooked

Livemount said at the moment she realized something needed to be done to combat the deep problem. She says some Native American kids are discouraged to better themselves

Livermount is one of 60 students from 49 colleges and universities chosen for the Udall scholarships that provide up to $7,000 for the scholar’s junior or senior year. This summer, Livermont is researching methamphetamine addiction
