South Dakota won three singles matches in straight-sets and five overall as the Coyotes beat South Dakota State 5-2 Sunday at Heuther Family Match Pointe.
With the win, South Dakota is now 10-10 overall and 3-1 in Summit League play.
“What a great day to be a Coyote,” said South Dakota tennis coach Brett Barnett. “I could not be more proud of how we competed. We dropped the doubles point, but dug in and fought for every singles point. Our intensity and desire to win was awesome today. Great job by Yuliya with another huge clinch!”
South Dakota State (13-9, 2-2 SL) grabbed the doubles point and held a 1-0 advantage headed into singles play.
Junior Emma Kranendonk, freshmen Maria Pandya and Ellie Burns scored three straight points for the Coyotes in straight-set wins.
In the No. 3 spot, Kranendonk beat Florencia Magni 6-2, 6-3, Pandya knocked off Morgan Brower 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot and Burns was victorious against Iasmin Rosa 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 spot. Burns is undefeated in Summit League singles action and is on a four-game winning streak. Pandya competed in singles action for the second time and is 2-0.
The Jackrabbits scored one more point to close the gap, but still trailed 3-2.
Junior Yuliya Sidenko clinched the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 win over Ffion Davies in the No. 2 spot. This is the second straight dual that Sidenko has clinched for the Coyotes. She remains undefeated in Summit League singles play with a record of 4-0.
Freshman Elise van Zijst competed in the No. 4 spot and came from behind to beat Tacy Haws-Lay 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 and South Dakota beat South Dakota State 5-2.
The win gives South Dakota another point in the Showdown Series. SDSU still leads 10-6.
