– South Dakota head tennis coach Malcolm Gilreath resigned on Wednesday, ending a 10-year run as USD’s head coach. He has accepted a non-coaching job in another industry.
Gilreath will leave as the program’s winningest coach, finishing with a 122-117 record. He led the program through the Division I transition and coached USD to a 28-24 record and a pair of Summit League Tournament appearances after the transition. Gilreath also coached two All-Summit League performers in Alena Sergeychik (2012) and Yamini Reddy (2013).
“I’d like to thank the student-athletes, the other USD coaches, the athletics staff, our Athletic Director, David Herbster, and President Jim Abbott for all the wonderful opportunities I had as a part of the Coyote family,” Gilreath said. “As I move on, I’ll appreciate the times together, and going forward I’ll always be a Coyote.”
Gilreath’s teams were among USD’s most successful in the classroom. During his tenure, USD tennis has earned the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) All-Academic Team award nine times and 37 individuals were named ITA Scholar-Athletes. His teams were also successful at the conference level, as the 2012-13 team earned The Summit League’s Team Academic Achievement Award after all 10 members made the league’s Commissioner’s List of Academic Excellence.
“Malcolm has been a part of the Coyote family for 10 years and he will be missed,” Herbster said. “He has run the program the right way and brought it up to the Division I level. We wish him the best in his new career and thank him for everything he has meant to the program.”
A national search for USD’s next tennis coach will begin immediately.
