South Dakota and South Dakota State each produced one of the football Players of the Week in the Missouri Valley Football Conference this week.
Defensive Player of the Week
DB Andrew Gray, South Dakota
6-2, 215, Sr., (New Lenox, Illinois/Lincoln Way West)
Gray led South Dakota with 10 tackles and forced three turnovers – two fumbles and an interception – in leading the Coyotes to a 35-28 win against Missouri State Saturday in Vermillion. On top of that, he broke up a pass on fourth down in Coyote territory that effectively ended the game.
Special Teams Player of the Week
PK Chase Vinatieri, South Dakota State
6-1, 210, Jr., (Sioux Falls, S.D./Roosevelt H.S.)
Vinatieri kicked two field goals and scored his second career touchdown as part of the Jackrabbits’ 54-51 overtime victory over Indiana State on Oct. 6. Vinatieri scored on a 15-yard run on a fake field goal attempt in the third quarter, then kicked field goals of 30 and 27 yards later in the second half. His two field goals upped his career total to 28, passing his uncle, Adam (27 field goals from 1991-94), for fifth place in program history.
