It was another victory for the University of South Dakota men’s basketball team Thursday at home and a close first loss for the Coyote women on the road.
South Dakota scored 17 unanswered points during a six-minute span near the midway point of the second half en route to an 80-46 win against Doane Thursday inside Sanford Coyote Sports Center. It was the second win in as many nights for the Coyotes (4-0), who are off to their best start in their Division I era.
Coyote guard Carlton Hurst scored a season-high 15 points and didn’t miss a shot all night. He was 6 of 6 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line. South Dakota also got 13 points from Trey Dickerson, 12 from Trey Burch-Manning and 11 off the bench from Triston Simpson.
A 7-3 run by the USD women in the final 34 seconds fell short as Arkansas defeated the Coyotes(2-1) 70-67 in Fayetteville.
Coyote sophomore guard Allison Arens tallied her third consecutive 20-point game. Arens scored 13 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter, including 10 on five straight USD possessions that brought Arkansas’ lead down to six with 5:42 to play. The sophomore shot 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the field and handed out four assists.
