An avenging women’s team and a road winning men’s team accounted for a pair of University of South Dakota basketball victories Saturday.
.For the second time in three days, South Dakota’s women’s basketball team avenged a double-digit loss. Raeshel Contreras and Nicole Seekamp scored 16 points each and Kelly Stewart provided 12 points off the bench as the Coyotes crushed first-place IUPUI 74-56 Saturday inside the DakotaDome.
South Dakota (14-11, 5-5 Summit) won all three games of a season-long three-game home stand to get even in Summit League play. The Coyotes handed IUPUI (19-7, 9-2) its first setback in 10 games. Eight of the Jaguars’ wins during their winning streak were by double digits.
—South Dakota senior center Trevor Gruis notched his 1,300th-career point and continued his dominance of IUPUI in a 71-67 men’s win Saturday at the Jungle. The Coyotes (10-15, 4-6 Summit) got a much-needed road win ahead of next week’s final two regular season home games.
Gruis has now scored 111 points in six career games against the Jaguars. He had a game-high 18 points on eight buckets and two free throws Saturday. He scored 10 points during the first eight minutes of the second half when the Coyotes made their move. The teams were locked at 32 at the break.
