South Dakota pole vaulters Emily Grove and Chris Nilsen will represent the United States at the 2017 IAAF World Championships this weekend at London Stadium in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Among the 132 athletes competing for Team USA at the IAAF World Championships, 20 competed collegiately during the 2017 outdoor season. South Dakota and Georgia are the only two schools to have both a collegiate male and female athlete make Team USA. Nilsen is the only freshman on Team USA for the World Championships.
Grove came in clutch in a third place jump-off at the U.S. Championships by tying her personal best height of 15 feet, 1 inch. A native of Pontiac, Ill., Grove is a six-time All-American for the Coyotes and became the ninth collegiate woman to break the 15-foot barrier this spring. The 2017 Summit League Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year, she captured her fourth Summit League pole vault title in May. She was also named a CoSIDA Academic All-American.
Nilsen vaulted a South Dakota program record 18-10 ¼ to place third at the U.S. Championships. A native of Kansas City, Mo., Nilsen became USD’s second NCAA Division I Champion in the indoor pole vault. He also placed third at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Nilsen garnered the Summit League’s Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year awards and broke the league’s indoor and outdoor championship meet records. He was also named the USTFCCCA Midwest Field Athlete of the Year and spent several months on the Bowerman Watch List.
Grove competes in the qualifying round at 1:45 p.m. CT on Friday, Aug. 4, while Nilsen’s qualifying round is slated for 4:40 a.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 6. The women’s pole vault final is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT on Sunday, Aug. 6, and the men’s final is scheduled for 1:35 p.m. CT on Tuesday, Aug. 8.
