The United States Cattlemen’s Association is asking Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue to prioritize the U.S. beef and cattle industry over foreign product during the COVID 19 pandemic. USCA President Brooke Miller says imported cattle are adding to the economic pressures being felt by producers.
He says if the glut of imports isn’t addressed there could be mass liquidation in the livestock sector.
Miller says they want the Ag Secretary and President to establish an emergency work force that would return to full operational capacity U.S. meatpacking plants.
Miller says if the Administration prioritizes the U.S. beef and cattle industry it won’t mean any costs for taxpayers.
Miller says there is not currently a cattle shortage in the country and utilization of the domestic supply must be done before turning to any foreign beef or cattle.
