Enrollment for USDA’s Coronavirus Food Assistance or CFAP program began this week at Farm Service Agency offices. Included in that COVID 19 pandemic relief package is funding help for cattle producers. U.S. Cattlemen’s Association Vice President and South Dakota cattleman Justin Tupper says the aid will be somewhat helpful but won’t be a lot.
The payment limit for livestock producers in the aid package is $250,000 and Tupper says that’s both positive and negative. He says the assistance is intended to help mostly the smaller and medium sized producers.
He advises cattle producers to take a serious look at this CFAP program and see if it’ll help their operations.
Tupper says the coronavirus has had a tough effect on the entire cattle industry along with other market snags.
Under CFAP, once the USDA determines a producer’s payment, then the agency will make a payment of up to 80 percent of the total within a week. The other 20 percent will be held back for later this summer.
