The U.S. Department of Agriculture along with the Food and Drug Administration are proceeding with a joint regulatory framework for cell cultured foods. Lia Biondo with the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association is pleased the agencies are working together on the issue.

She says earlier this year, USCA submitted a petition for rulemaking to the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service and are still waiting a response on that.

Biondo says the only thing they know now is which areas USDA and FDA have jurisdiction over with the lab grown meat issue.

Biondo encourages USCA members to weigh in with the two agencies on the need for making sure only meat that comes from an animal is labeled as such.
