The United States Cattlemen’s Association is outlining concerns about Mexican meat let into the U.S. 54 people from Mexico were sickened. USCA President Brooke Miller says the Mexican beef in question contained a beta agonist that’s not legally allowed in the United States or several other countries.

He says American consumers want a safe product and know U.S. product is safe, the major problem is that FSIS allows all beef to be repackaged and labeled as product of the USA.

Miller says there’s not doubt the FSIS inspection system in this case was problematic but he says there’s also a problem because consumers have no way of knowing where their beef comes from.

Miller says USCA will be pushing Congress to get that labeling law reinstated.
