The U.S. Department of Agriculture along with the Food and Drug Administration will hold a public meeting in October to talk about the use of cell cultured or lab grown meat. United States Cattlemen Association members will also take part. President and North Dakota rancher Kenny Graner says he’s pleased they’re holding the meeting and that USDA is one of the agencies involved.

He says his group doesn’t oppose the making of cell cultured or lab grown meat but that they shouldn’t be labeled as meat, they should be labeled as an alternative protein.

Graner says it’s positive the first day of the meeting will focus primarily on the potential hazards that need to be controlled for the safe production of animal cell cultures of food products and oversight considerations by federal agencies.

The second day of the meeting on October 24 will be geared toward labeling considerations.
