United States Cattlemen’s Association leaders remain concerned about possible beef imports from Brazil. President Danni Beer, a producer from Corson County South Dakota, says reports vary on the timing of shipments following USDA approval. Some reports indicate it could be within the next three months while others say the end of the year. Beer says the problem is the prevalence of foot and mouth disease in regions of Brazil and the possibility of it infecting the U.S. herd.

She says if Brazil imports are allowed producers will need to be on alert for any possible signs of FMD so they can be ready to respond.

Beer says there are several problems when product is accepted from countries with lower health standards and regulations than the U.S.

Beer says her group will continue to gather more information on any projected or confirmed date for Brazil’s market access to the United States.
