Seed companies have seen unprecedented demand for cover crop seed with USDA’s decision to move up the harvest date for the crop on prevented plant acres to September 1. One of those companies is Mustang Seeds of Madison, South Dakota. Small Grains Division Production Manager Chris Lee says within just hours of USDA’s announcement they had hundreds of orders for cover crop seed, especially for those that can be hayed.
He says as a company they still have a good supply of seed for most cover crops, except hay millet.
Lee says the hay millets have been popular because they grow quickly and provide a good quality feed for livestock.
Lee adds small grains like oats, barley and spring wheat can even be planted after Labor Day and still get a good crop by November 1.
