October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month – a time to raise awareness and raise funds for research into the cause, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the illness. A new study suggests that mammograms may lead to over-diagnosis. University of Nebraska Medical Center Surgical Oncologist Dr. Edibaldo Silva says the tests are working but with concerning results.
Silva says they need to decrease the number of false positives that lead to many biopsies every year.
It is still recommended that women ages 50 and up receive a mammogram every year. Younger women should discuss their options with their physician.
