Researchers at the University of Nebraska Lincoln Extension Center and Sandhills Laboratory have begun a project that uses a smart feeder to improve precision livestock management. UNL Assistant Professor in Animal Science Travis Mulliniks says part of the challenge is to get the proper feed to cows that are spread out over a large rangeland. He says they can improve that by using the solar powered smart feeder technology.

He says its critical for producers to be able to control their feed costs and the hope is the smart feeder will help with that.

Mulliniks says using precision technology allows producers to make their feed changes right at their computer.

Mulliniks says the solar powered smart feeder is connected to the cow’s electronic id ear tags.
