The University of Minnesota has released a new hard red spring wheat variety. It’s named after the retired Executive Director of the Minnesota Wheat Research and Promotion Council and Minnesota Association of Wheat Growers Dave Torgerson. U of M extension Wheat Breeder Jim Anderson says Torgy will be available to certified seed growers in 2021 and for widespread grower use in 2022.
He says Torgy has several advantages including good disease resistance.
Anderson says trials in both Minnesota and South Dakota are showing Torgy to be a very popular wheat variety.
When Torgerson led the Wheat Association and Promotion Council, six new varieties were released from 2011 to 2019 with Linkert in 2013 which has been the most popular variety for the past five years in Minnesota.
