United States Wins Important WTO Case Over India

United States Wins Important WTO Case Over India

This week the United States won an important trade victory at the World Trade Organization. The ruling was in favor of the U.S. against India which had banned poultry and eggs due to their concerns of Avian Influenza. Jim Sumner President of the U.S. Poultry and Egg Export Council says the U.S. has a low form of avian influenza not the highly pathogenic type that’s seen in India.
Sumner says the WTO found that India used non scientific reasons for their ban and thus were in violation of world trading rules.
He says the ruling sets a major precedent for other trading partners and makes scientific reasons the major trading standard.
Sumner says India could appeal the ruling but doesn’t think they will since the decision was so heavily in favor of the United States and science based standards.
