Pork is the largest U.S. agricultural export to Australia with the potential to grow greatly if trade concerns can be ironed out. Iowa State University Ag Economist Dr. Dermot Hayes says the U.S. has been denied market access for fresh pork due to PRRS disease.
He says the U.S which exports over 100 million tons of pork annually to Australia could see that doubled if PRRS concerns could be overcome.
Hayes says regaining market access won’t happen overnight and may take years to achieve.
In 2017, Australia was ranked as 10th in pork imports.
