This week, South Dakota Senators John Thune and Mike Rounds introduced the U.S. Beef Integrity Act. The legislation would make certain that the Product of the USA label only goes to beef and beef products derived from one or more animals born, raised and slaughtered in the United States. U.S. Cattlemen’s Association President Kenny Graner, a North Dakota rancher is pleased with the introduction as it follows his group’s beef labeling policy.
He says the Beef Integrity Act helps solve the problem of foreign beef being brought into the U.S. and relabeled as product of the USA.
Graner says having Product of the USA on U.S. beef not only helps with domestic production and informing consumers, it also will help with export markets.
Graner is also pleased the South Dakota Senators sent a letter to USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service supporting the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association’s petition for rule making to address beef labeling concerns.
