Uncertainty with House Leadership May Slow Ag Policy Movement

The uncertainty surrounding House leadership may slow the movement of important ag policy issues. Now that Majority leader Kevin McCarthy dropped out of consideration, the two most likely candidates are Florida Congressman Daniel Webster and Utah Representative Jason Chaffetz. Nebraska Farm Bureau National Affairs Coordinator Jordan Dux says movement on needed policy isn’t likely without a House Speaker in place.

Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry suggested that an interim leader could be named. However, Dux says that would just lead to more uncertainty.

Dux says it’s getting harder to find leadership in Congress that has an ag background or even understands agricultural issues.

Another possible replacement for John Boehner is Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan who says he’s not interested in the job.
