The ever-changing political situation in Ukraine could have short and long term impacts on the global feed grain market. U.S. Grains Council.CEO Tom Sleight says so far Ukraine exports have not been disrupted…ports are open and vessels are loading. However, shipments have become increasingly difficult as farmers are holding grain to hedge against a devaluing currency. That’s creating some opportunity for additional U.S. exports to North Africa, the Middle East and China.
He says the longer term impact could be more significant as Ukraine corn planting is due to start in the next 30 to 45 days, and credit availability may become an issue.
Ukraine reported a record corn harvest of more than 1.2 billion bushels in the 2013-14 marketing year and exports are projected to reach 728 million bushels.
