United States Trade Representative Michael Froman is asking the World Trade Organization to develop a dispute settlement panel to look at Indonesia’s import restrictions on U.S. agricultural products including beef. National Cattlemen Beef Association’s Vice President of Government Relations Colin Woodall says while that’s not a huge market it’s important all countries follow World Trade rules in order to have a level playing field.
Meanwhile Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack says if the WTO rules against Indonesia, Nebraska’s exports alone could grow from $ 27 million today to as much as $ 160 million. Woodall says when it comes to trade, every dollar counts and trade rules need to cover all products.
U.S. trade officials say Indonesia has implemented a complicated import license regime that includes timing, price and quantity restrictions. Those rules unfairly limit how much U.S. product can enter the country.
