Government data shows U.S. soybean farmers have again exported a record amount of soybeans in the 2016-2017 marketing year, shipping 2.6 billion bushels to international buyers. United Soybean Export Council Chairman and Nebraska grower Jim Miller says that marks four straight years of record U.S. soybean exports.
He says these exports illustrate why the U.S. should not withdraw from the North American Free Trade Agreement, as Mexico came in as the second largest customer of U.S soybeans behind China.
Miller says soybean exports are currently lagging and with more soybean acres expected in 2018, it will be a challenge to set another record in the current marketing year.
The record soybean exports for 2016-2017 were valued at more than $28 billion, and mark the second year in a row exports exceeded 60-percent of U.S soybean production.
