Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan announced bans on the import of poultry from Tennessee following a high path avian influenza outbreak this week that caused the depopulation of over 73,000 chickens. They also banned imports from Wisconsin where a low pathogenic bird flu popped up. National Association of Egg Farmers President Ken Klippen says his group is concerned with these bans.

He says the two states hit the hardest by bird flu in 2015 have already heightened their biosecurity efforts.

Klippen says within the poultry industry meat production relies on exports more than the egg side, but the ban will still have a negative impact.

Klippen says it’s important to note chickens in cages are less susceptible to bird flu than free range chickens because they are more likely to be exposed to migratory birds that spread the disease.
