The Trump Administration reportedly wants to settle trade disputes outside the World Trade Organization and is even is looking at possibly pulling out of the pact. The President says its because the U.S. gets treated unfairly in the dispute settlement process. U.S. Grains Council CEO Tom Sleight says he understands the President’s view, but thinks agriculture has fared well under the WTO.
He says other countries would also say that the WTO dispute settlement process is unfair because its all about your perspective.
Sleight says the U.S. can already settle disputes outside of the WTO and in fact, they are the last resort when settling trade cases.
Other sources say the reason the President wants to pull out of the WTO is so he can re-negotiate NAFTA and not have Mexico file a WTO case against the U.S.
