The United States is giving South Africa until March 15 to comply with export requirements that open the door for U.S. pork, poultry and other products. National Pork Producer Council President Elect John Weber says he’s pleased the Administration is pushing South Africa on that trade issue. They have limited exports in recent years due to unwarranted sanitary requirements.
He says South Africa is an important market for U.S. pork. Renewed access for U.S. meat and poultry products generate $75 million of shipments annually.
Weber says he saw the huge potential market for U.S. pork in South Africa when he traveled there three years ago.
President Obama says he will officially suspend South Africa’s trade benefits in 60 days unless that nation reassesses health issues that restrict U.S. farm exports.
