Argentina has now sent beef to the United States for the first time in seventeen years. The shipment comes just two weeks after the USDA declared Argentina eligible to resume shipments of raw beef. U.S. Cattlemen’s Association President Kenny Graner says his group opposes allowing Argentina beef exports into the U.S. as they still have several concerns with the safety of the product.
He says his organization’s leaders plan to meet early in January with the Food Safety and Inspection Service and Animal Plant Health Inspection officials about their concerns.
Graner says by letting Argentina export beef to the U.S. it puts more pressure on the U.S. cattle industry.
Argentina now has a quota of 20,000 metric tons a year to access the U.S. market, exempt from duties.
