The majority of the beef industry groups involved in the Beef Check Off working group have signed a memorandum of understanding that calls for a dollar per head increase in the beef check off. The U.S. Cattlemen’s Association chose not to sign the M-O-U. Cattlemen’s Executive Vice President Jess Peterson says they were hoping for more reforms of the check off that would have led to more producer control.
Peterson says one of the key reforms that needs to be in the beef check off program is complete separation of the federation of state beef councils from the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.
Peterson says on the surface the M-O-U looks like it reforms the governance of the check off when in reality it doesn’t
Peterson says U.S. Cattlemen will continue to engage with the working group in hopes of finding more positive solutions to enhancing the beef check off.
