Cuba has reduced purchases of agricultural products from the United States because their economy is struggling and because they can get credit from other countries. National Farmers Union’s Senior Vice President of Programs Chandler Goule says that’s been a long standing problem that needs to be resolved.
He says currently, Cuba can obtain credit from many of our export competitors including Brazil and Venezuela.
Goule says while it may not be a huge agricultural market for the U.S., Cuba is an important one.
Some contend that Cuba is using the credit issue to try and convince the U.S. to change its trade policy and lift the embargo. Goule doesn’t believe that’s the case.
