The United Kingdom has hired a trade commissioner to focus specifically on North America. That’s as the U.K. prepares for post Brexit trade negotiations. Nebraska Farm Bureau National Affairs Coordinator Jordan Dux sees that as an opportunity for the United States to work on a bilateral trade deal with the U.K.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says U.S. officials have made it clear they are prepared to launch trade talks as soon as the U.K. is ready. Dux says that’s also encouraging.

In 2014, the United Kingdom was reported to rely on the European Union for 27 percent of its food imports. Dux says the U.S. can certainly meet that need.

The U.K.’s trade chief says with 90 percent of growth expected to come from outside the European Union, the nation needs to focus on where emerging markets are.
