Two Yankton residents were killed in a two-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday afternoon five miles west of Yankton.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol says Khuyen Nguyen, 52, and Ryan Nguyen, 39, were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash located on South Dakota Highway 52. The two occupants in the other vehicle were injured.
Sunday’s crash was reported at 3:10 p.m. The Highway Patrol says a 2014 Toyota Camry was westbound on Highway 52. The vehicle, driven by Khuyen Nguyen, drifted across the center line and into the path of an eastbound 2007 Grand Cherokee Laredo Jeep. The Highway Patrol says the driver of the jeep, Corey Sestak, tried to avoid a collision, but could not.
Sestak, 32, and the passenger, Katherine Sestak, 30, both of Sioux Falls, received serious non-life threatening injuries. Both were taken to a Yankton hospital. Katherine Sestak was eventually transported to a hospital in Sioux Falls.
The investigation continues. The Highway Patrol says no charges are pending and alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
Other agencies at the scene were the Yankton County Sheriff’s Office, Yankton Fire Department and Yankton Ambulance.
The Highway Patrol is part of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
