Residents of Turner County South Dakota will vote on their county livestock zoning ordinance on August 29. Centerville farmer and Ag United President Richard Vasgaard says the county commission and zoning board spent nearly 18 months working on new rules, including setbacks, to make them fair. However, those opposing the changes have brought the zoning ordinance to a vote.
He says the new rules would change the 2008 setback requirements for building a concentrated animal feeding operation and he thinks they’ve come up with a good compromise.
Vasgaard says they also raised the number of animal units required for a CAFO to get a permit to 2,499, to make it easier to expand.
He says this will help family farm operations trying to bring on the next generation.
