The Turner County South Dakota planning and zoning board will hold another public meeting on changes in the county zoning ordinance. The next meeting is set for November 17 at the Community Center in Parker. Ag United President Richard Vasgaard farms in Turner County. He says the main issue in the proposed zoning ordinance has to do with setbacks for large scale feeding operations.
An initial zoning ordinance was passed in 2014, but a judge threw it out after a lawsuit from Parker residents. The zoning and setback issues have been at the center of controversy in the county due to a six million head egg laying operation being proposed by Sonstegard Foods to be located just northwest of Parker.
Vasgaard says unfortunately there is not a consensus among agricultural and urban interests on the zoning issue and he’s unsure how the board is going to rule on the ordinance.
