The National Turkey Federation and Minnesota Turkey Grower’s Association are asking Congress for help in addressing the widening propane shortage. More than 20 states have issued disaster declarations related to the shortage. Minnesota Turkey Grower’s Association Executive Director Steve Olson says they’re trying to get a Texas Pipeline to begin shipping the product and get more of it headed North.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration says propane stocks have fallen far below the five year seasonal average. Stocks are 25.8 million barrels lower than a year ago, an almost 45 percent drop. Olson says for his state’s producers which lead the nation in turkey production the shortage is at crisis proportions.

Olson says they’re trying to reach out to the Texas propane supplier but once they’re able to get them shipping it, it’ll take 12 days to get it to Minnesota.
