USDA’s Food, Safety and Inspection Service has proposed new federal rules to reduce Salmonella and Campylobacter in poultry products. Minnesota Turkey Grower’s Association Executive Director Steve Olson says his group will be reviewing the proposal. He says food safety is a major priority for the Association.
He says his industry is continuing to work with consumers to make sure they know how to properly store, handle, and cook poultry products. Olson says they’ve also implemented many science based protocols to help ensure consumer safety.
The risk assessments done by FSIS estimates implementing the new standards would prevent an average of 50,000 illnesses each year. The final rules and implementation date are expected to be announced this spring.
