Republican Presidential Candidate Donald Trump spoke in Nebraska over the weekend about beef trade, Japan and the Trans Pacific Partnership, which he opposes. He says if Japan wants to charge a 38-percent tariff on Nebraska beef, then the U.S. will slap a 38-percent tariff on their autos. Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association Executive Director Pete McClymont says Trump’s comments show he doesn’t really understand the TPP deal.
He says Nebraska stands to gain economically if the TPP receives Congressional approval.
McClymont says his group would like to see the trade agreement approved this year, although that may be a heavy lift.
The Trans Pacific Partnership deal calls for Japan’s tariffs on U.S. beef to fall nine-percent over the next 15 years.
